discover tora.
Tora is a hidden gem on New Zealand’s South Wairarapa coast.
Nestled on the edge of the Wairarapa coast, just 45 minutes from Martinborough, Tora is home to a small but deeply connected community. Although it only has a few houses and residents, Tora's connection extends far across Aotearoa.
Known for its rugged hills, excellent surf, thriving fishery, and wild, pristine landscapes, Tora offers a step back in time—a chance to connect with nature and experience its captivating beauty. Whether you’re exploring the coastline, harvesting kaimoana, walking the hills, or simply soaking up its tranquility, Tora’s rugged and untouched charm is truly unique and unforgettable, and something Awhea Coastal Trust hopes to protect.
The Story Behind Awhea coastal trust
Honouring the Past
We acknowledge and honour the original kaitiaki (guardians) of this land, Ngāti Hinewaka of Ngāti Kahungunu, and Rangitāne who have protected and sustained Tora for many generations. We hope to learn from and integrate Mātauranga Māori (ancestral knowledge) to enhance our conservation efforts, ensuring that Tora remains a vibrant and thriving natural paradise for all to enjoy for many years to come.
Our Name and Mission
Awhea is the Māori name for the central awa (river) that flows through the heart of Tora. Our name symbolises the connection and wairua (spirit) of the whenua (land), waters, and people of Tora, and the symbiotic relationship between them all. Passionate about protecting their environment, locals Claire and Troy established Awhea Coastal Trust to safeguard the natural beauty and heritage of Tora for future generations.
Our mission is clear: to protect, preserve, and enhance the natural environment of Tora.
Whatungarongaro te tangata toitū te whenua.
As man disappears from sight, the land remains.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION
Our mission is to preserve and enhance Tora’s natural beauty and biodiversity for future generations. This means taking proactive steps to address environmental threats, including climate change and championing sustainable practices that benefit our ecosystems.
COMMUNITY CONNECTION
A strong, engaged community is at the heart of our mission. Local residents, mana whenua, bach owners, and visitors are welcomed to join our initiatives — it’s important we foster a sense of shared responsibility and collective action, making Tora a better place to live and visit.
EDUCATION & culture
We believe that education and understanding, along with recognising and respecting Tora’s Maori heritage is important in fostering deeper connections with our environment and safeguarding it. Through digital education, events, and programs, we hope to raise awareness and increase impact in conservation and sustainable practices for our backyard and further.
